Things To Be Happy About // 01

Wednesday, July 6, 2016

I've been feeling a bit down lately, more negative than I'd like to be. Encompassed in a cloud that won't dissipate. In times like this, it's important to focus on the silver lining of situations. (I had even made a resolution to document more positive things.) Writing or talking about my troubles can help, but I also want to make sure that all of life's good things get their fair share of attention, big and small. Because there is still so much good happening.

ONE. First thing's first: it's a shortened work week. One day off makes all the difference.

TWO. This weekend I went to the Eyes to the Skies festival in Lisle, which ended up to be much larger than I expected. We walked around a bit and saw the hot air balloons, then laid in the grass to listen to music, watch the fireworks, and eat $1 slices of pizza.

THREE. Every year for the fourth of July, my mom's side of the family gets together for burgers and pool volleyball. This year, a lot of the conversation was about new babies and new houses. I'm happy (and lucky) that so much of my family still lives close to each other, allowing us to share life's milestones with each other.

FOUR. I finished the latest season of "Orange Is The New Black," and wow, shit got REAL. I didn't feel too invested at first, watching more out of obligation and interested. But everything ends up coming together at the end in a powerful way. The last two episodes gave me actual goosebumps.

FIVE. Living on my own can be difficult. Anything that needs to be done has to be done by ME. Bills, cooking, cleaning. It can feel like a never-ending to-do list. Despite that, I'm glad I'm challenging myself. It's experience, and I'm doing it.

SIX. I've gotten rid of a lot of things lately, and it feels GREAT. I've donated a few bags of clothes and threw away a lot of stuff I haven't looked at in years but kept around just in case. My apartment frustration was actually a factor in my big cleaning – the less I own, the less I have to maintain.

SEVEN. My week-long vacation is coming up fast. I only have to stay sane for ten more days.
