What You Need And What You Don't

Monday, July 11, 2016

You need
to be direct and upfront about what you want and how you feel.
You don't need
to drop hints and hope they get it.

You need
to be able to trust that if someone is upset with you, they will tell you.
You need your friends to be straightforward and honest.
You don't need
to worry about whether a friend is mad at you and just isn't telling you.
You don't need to feel like you're walking on eggshells when you talk to a person.

You need
to accept yourself, to love yourself.
You need to find comfort in your own skin, to treat your body nicely,
because it's the only one you have.
You don't need
to scrutinize yourself in the mirror,
poking and prodding at the parts you wish didn't exist.

You need
junk food (in moderation).
You need pizza nights and lunch dates with your friends.
You don't need
salads 24/7.
You don't need diets.
Live healthy, eat right, and splurge from time to time.

You need
people who make you feel like you could conquer the world.
You need people who are proud of you
and celebrate your accomplishments alongside you.
You don't need
people who make you feel like you're not good enough.
You don't need to compete with or compare yourself to others.

You need
to feel confident and proud of what you've accomplished.
You don't need
to disparage your successes.

You need
to make mistakes,
and you need to learn from them.
You don't need
to be perfect.
You don't need to feel bad for messing up.

You need
to take care of yourself and give yourself what you need.
Your mental health is important.
You don't need
to feel guilty for withdrawing occasionally.
For choosing a night alone with yourself over one out with friends.

You need
to let yourself be sad sometimes.
Let yourself cry.
Let whatever is gnawing at you take hold for an hour,
then move on.
You don't need
to hold it together all the time.
You don't need to be eternally happy.

You need
to spend time with your family.
When you have no one else, you'll still have them.
You don't need
to spend every weekend with your friends,
or only see your family on holidays.

You need
to be challenged, by yourself and others.
Have intellectual conversations, respectful debates.
You don't need
people to always agree with you.

You need
to throw caution to the wind every once in a while.
Step outside of your comfort zone,
do things that scare you.
You don't need
to stick to the familiar,
to always play it safe.

You need
to be able to speak freely to your friends, without judgment,
about your worries, your fears, your random thoughts.
You don't need
to silence yourself.

You need
relationships and friendships that make you feel comfortable, secure, and important,
no matter how often or seldom you talk to one another.
You don't need
a ton of friends – just good ones.

You need
to put your focus and energy into the good parts of life.
Find the silver lining. Appreciate the little things.
You don't need
to be clouded by the negatives,
to let something small ruin your day.

You don't need
uncertainty, doubt, pessimism, or deceit.
You need
comfort, honesty, inspiration, confidence, and love.
